History

The railway was opened in 1846 and was the first railway to serve Bedford, running to the main line at Bletchley - just as it does to day. Extensions from Bedford to Cambridge and Bletchley to Oxford were opened later but these closed in 1967. However these are scheduled to be restored - the aim of the East West Rail Project - updates on this project can be found here. There were many attempts to close the line in the 1970s and 80s and this led to the formation of the Association which fought to save the service. In recent years traffic has grown and today the line is a vital transport link for the villages along its length and many school students including those attending Kimberley college at Stewartby.
